I use a 4" wide card base because I always cut my DSP at 4" widths.  You get more bang for your buck using this width.  In a 12" x 12" piece of DSP you can get 6 pieces to use on cards, each measuring 4" x 5 1/2".  If you cut your DSP at 4 1/4" widths, you will only get 4 pieces, each measuring 4 1/4" x 5 1/2".
